Counseling and Psychological Services

It’s not uncommon for college students to feel overwhelmed, stressed or anxious. When harnessed positively, stress can motivate us toward our dreams and goals. But stress over a long period of time is harmful, and lead to an array of issues: anger, sadness, fear, worry, panic, depression, trouble concentrating, excessive absences, difficulty sleeping, suicidal thoughts, disruptive behavior, substance abuse, and declining grades. Please remember that your mental health matters. Help is available. Cheyney offers therapy services through CAPS. Off-campus (virtual) behavioral healthcare is available at no cost with Dr. Tracey Jones (Dr. J.) in her role as Consulting Psychiatrist.

To help you handle the stresses of college life, Cheyney offers individual counseling for currently enrolled students who seek assistance with:

  • Personal concerns
  • Emotional distress
  • Interpersonal issues
  • Psychological disorders
  • Crisis situations

In addition, Cheyney offers family counseling and counseling services with other Cheyney students upon request. Group counseling may also be offered according to interest. Psycho-education is also available to classes by faculty request, or through student organizations and residence hall groups.

The Short List: Dr. J’s Tips for Better Mental Health

    • Set boundaries for yourself to prevent over-extension
    • Remember that you deserve time to yourself.
    • Know that healing from past hurts doesn’t mean forgetting them; it means giving them less space in your present.
    • Make (or refresh) a list of what you’re thankful for and look at it 3 times a week.
    • Know that asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness.
    • Do not suffer in silence.
