The Learning Communities Program is a collective, campus-wide effort to advance the knowledge of Cheyney students as a whole and on an individual level. Our program establishes learning cohorts to encourage integration across courses, and involves students in social issues that extend beyond the classroom. By coupling academic support with social connections, the program helps to build and reinforce confidence in both settings to further foster success.
Goals:
- To establish a cohesive learning experience for Cheyney University students
- To implement innovative teaching and learning strategies in the classroom and beyond
- To engage students in active learning strategies in the classroom and beyond
- To foster student integration into the Cheyney University environment
- To increase student retention, persistence and completion
The Cheyney Learning Communities
Cheyney University students are placed into one of four learning communities based on shared educational goals and interests. The learning communities correspond to the four academic departments of the University:
- The House of Ed Bradley – The Department of Social Sciences
- The House of Julian Abele – The Department of Humanities
- The House of Octavious Catto – The Department of Business, Education and Professional Studies
- The House of Rebecca Cole – The Department of Natural and Applied Sciences
Each house is named after a prominent Cheyney University alumni, and has a shield that represents its academic programs. The color of the shield represents the color of the academic regalia assigned to the discipline.
Each learning community has two professional leads: one faculty member and one life coach. Mentoring is further provided by student leaders.
Learning Community cohorts share a common residence-hall living space in addition to common classes, assignments, and co-curricular experiences. These shared experiences cultivate a learning environment that promotes camaraderie and collaboration in a well-supported environment. In this way, the program encourages integration of learning across courses and disciplines, both inside and outside of the classroom.
