Amir Campbell – Artist Statement
Every piece I render starts out with a continuous question. Does the artist create art, or does art create the artist? I pose this question in an effort to elaborate my purpose for painting in that every creation is a constant ebb and flow of creation, creating, only to be re created by what was created. To make, produce, or bring into existence the artists that creates creations….(Inspire)…… create inspiration to spring fourth. That artist being myself in two forms, I tend to become art by merging with the art that I create, and then an artist through inspiration. As artist we command the tools in which we invest new form. In turn those tools connect with an intangible equation, Artist + Create = Creation, or 1 + 1 = 3 causing the sum of the parts to galvanize the whole.
As an Artist I too am a work of art as I tend to become. The word become in its purest essence in infinite and full of potential. I imagine myself being refined, through every piece and emerging manifested into the museum of the world as a finished work.
A canvas is not a painting until the artist commands its existence through the stroke of his brushes by wisdom. Michelangelo once said that he only brings to form that which is already there when concerning his marble sculptures, so in essence every piece is just a reflection of what’s in me.
Amir Campbell is a Multi-Faceted Creative. Amir always had an allure for beauty and structure as he would always ask his Grandmother to drive him to view the Philadelphia historic landmarks and statues every sunday after church services during his youth. This later would influence the composition and negative space of his work. Being educated in the public school system, Amir would draw from his community to inspire animations and some portraiture. The lack of resources in his community motivated him to become more astute to the art world.
Being an urban youth immersed in the urban community mixed with his spiritual upbringing Amir was engaged in the dichotomy of the fine art world and street art. Naturally the composition and contrast of statues intrigued his eye while the surrounding community influenced his inner street artist. Amir merged the traditional approach of using canned spray paint to mark up buildings and city high rises with the fluidity and control of the Airbrush. “Painting with an Airbrush is my way of tapping into my inner street artist but my style of painting takes a more traditional fine art approach”. As Amir outgrew his surroundings his Father stepped in and moved Amir from the Urban community to a more diverse and integrated suburban community. Amir budded at Penn Wood High School where he begin to tap into his inner Fine artist under the guidance of art instructors. Upon graduation Amir attended Cheyney University, it is there where Amir begin to learn to fly in the art world when he met than Professor Marietta-Dantonio Madsen and Professor Joel keener. Along with these great professors Amir begin to embark on an international journey which led to numerous encounters with the elite and accolades that reached as widespread as The White House with awards from President Barack Obama, The Pentagon, and the United Nations. Amir now known as Amiracle coined his name from his premature birth and his return to life after his lung collapse while being delivered. “Everyday after that moment I have considered it Amiracle”. Amir’s collectors includes celebrities such as Spike Lee, Joss Stone, Dr. Cornel West, Sonya Sanchez, Pat Martino, Senator Vincent Hughes, Sheryl Lee-Ralph, Abiodun Oyewole, Jymie Merrit, Harold Carrol, Monette Sudler, Governor Ed Rendell, Questlove from The Roots, McCoy Tyner, Tavis Smiley and more!
Amir has received various awards such as The Key to the City of West Chester, Volunteer Service Award from President Barack Obama, Cheney University Fine Art Honor Society Charter Member. Member of Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., Keystone Honors Academy, Cheyney University Change Makers Award Recipient.
