Emergency Preparedness and Response
Prepared to Protect Our Community
While we hope the situation never arises, Cheyney University has taken proactive steps to prepare for a wide range of emergency situations. The University has established a comprehensive Emergency Operations Plan that outlines clear protocols for managing immediate actions, coordinating resources, and ensuring an organized response during an emergency or disaster. This plan encompasses our facilities, services, and administrative structures, ensuring that every part of campus plays a role in keeping our community safe.
Our highest priority in any emergency is the protection of lives. Secondarily, we work to preserve valuable research, property, community assets, and the environment. Once the immediate emergency has passed, our goal is to restore academic and operational functions as quickly and safely as possible.
In addition to our established plan, Cheyney University continually reviews and strengthens its safety procedures in alignment with best practices across higher education. This includes regular training for campus personnel, collaboration with local and state emergency agencies, campus-wide alert systems, and ongoing assessments of campus infrastructure. These efforts ensure that Cheyney remains ready to respond swiftly, communicate clearly, and support our students, faculty, and staff through any unexpected event.
For a detailed explanation of Cheyney University’s emergency response procedures—including how we assess threats, issue alerts, and coordinate campus-wide action—please refer to the Emergency Response section of the University’s Clery Act Report.
If you have any questions or comments regarding the Emergency Operations Plan, please contact the Cheyney Campus & Public Safety at 610-399-2405.
What You Can Do to Stay Prepared
Everyone plays a role in campus safety. Students, faculty, and staff can take simple steps to stay ready:
- Know Your Exits: Take a moment to note the nearest exits in classrooms, residence halls, and gathering spaces.
- Review Safety Procedures: Familiarize yourself with evacuation routes, shelter-in-place instructions, and building protocols.
- Report Concerns: If you see something that seems unsafe or out of place, report it immediately to Campus Security.
- Save Important Numbers: Keep emergency contacts — including Campus Security — stored in your phone.
- Stay Informed: Read University communications and monitor your email for important updates and procedures.
Preparedness starts with awareness, and taking these small steps helps ensure the wellbeing of the entire Cheyney community.
