About the Jeanne Clery Act

The Clery Act is a consumer protection law that aims to provide transparency around campus crime. Under this act, all colleges and universities that participate in federal financial aid programs are required to keep and disclose information about crime on and near campus. Compliance is monitored by the United States Department of Education.

In order to comply with Clery Act requirements, colleges and universities must understand what the law entails, where their responsibilities lie, and what they can do to actively foster campus safety.

The Campus Security Act requires colleges and universities to:

• Publish an annual report every year by October 1st that contains three years of campus crime statistics and certain campus security policy statements;
• Disclose crime statistics for the campus, public areas immediately adjacent to or running through the campus, and certain non-campus facilities and remote classrooms.

These statistics must be gathered from campus police or security, local law enforcement, and other University officials who have significant responsibility for student and campus activities.
