On October 21, 2017, alumni, current students, faculty, staff and visitors turned out in full force to celebrate Cheyney University of Pennsylvania’s annual Homecoming. This year’s homecoming celebration not only recognized Cheyney’s past, but cultivated a vital new outlook for the future of the nation’s oldest Historically Black College and University (HBCU).
The day commenced with the Welcome Home: Alumni Brunch, hosted by Interim President Walton that filled the Ada Georges Ballroom with over a hundred Cheyneyites. Over breakfast, Alum reminisced with friends, and shared current events, including highlights from the 180th Anniversary Gala (hosted by the Cheyney University National Alumni Association – CUNAA) held on Friday, October 20.
Interim President Walton addressed the audience of alums on the current status of the University, noting that Cheyney’s steps towards transformation are all being completed to ensure a strong future for the University. Additionally, he shared news on the various business initiatives, academic strategies and fundraising efforts that will be implemented as part of Cheyney’s new growth and development plan.
Following brunch, the crowd rushed to the O’Shields-Stevenson Stadium for the attraction of the day – the Homecoming game. The Wolves faced the West Chester University Rams, and during halftime game-goers witnessed a performance from the Soulful Sound Band with a guest appearance from R&B artists, and Philadelphia natives, J2L. The day closed out with tailgating, singing on the historic Quad and a Greek Yard Show, hosted by the Student Government Association (SGA).
Homecoming week kicked off with the annual Coronation ceremony.
The Wednesday evening event, saw Nina-Simone Beaver and Trinis Robinson crowed as the 2017-18 Mister and Miss Cheyney University. The campus was also introduced to the members of the Royal Court, Homecoming King and Queen and Organizational Leaders.
On Thursday, CUNAA hosted the Barbara Daniel-Cox Alumni Student Scholarship Reception dinner, where they raised approximately $40,000 in proceeds to benefit student scholarships.
Additional SGA events during Homecoming week included, the annual Fashion Show, where Cheyney’s Iconic Models group ripped the runway alongside Lincoln University’s modeling troupe, a Carnival, Rap Battle and an October themed festival.
